Evaluation

For our Unit 13 FMP Project, we could freely decide on what we wanted our theme to be. Whilst this was initially intimidating, the freedom was refreshing. I was able to fully explore my creativity with no restrictions and I found that very enjoyable. I decided I wanted to take an idea I had already had and started to turn into a comic and create my FMP with it. Whilst I wouldn't say that my idea changed over the course of working on it, it did evolve and become more in depth than it initially was, especially the contextual research I conducted sparked my creativity and inspired me to elaborate the story I had already thought up.

The biggest issue I faced during this project was that I was forced to work at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, I was unsure whether I would have the equipment I'd need to work at home and then when I was lucky enough to acquire it, I found myself slowly losing focus throughout the weeks. To help combat this, I tried to work in different spaces of my home to keep myself in a fresh environment all the time. However, it still proved itself to be quite difficult to fight. Aside from that, the only issues I faced were issues with the programme, or more specifically me not knowing the programme well enough. But these were easily fixed with some research and did not pose too big of a problem.

I think this project was extremely useful in helping me improve on several skills. For example, I think that despite the animation being quite short, you can see a lot of improvement in fluidity and ambitiousness alone when comparing the beginning to the end. I also feel that animating, where I need to draw many frames, has helped me loosen up my art, which in turn has helped it look more fluid. I've also become slightly more comfortable drawing anatomy and poses, as this was something that I could not avoid when making my animation.

When I started the project, I already had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do, however my research helped me solidify this and elaborate on what I had and so, I am extremely glad that I conducted all my research, as it helped me create a more grounded and interesting project.

When looking at my final product, whilst I am quite happy with what I managed to do, I am disappointed that I could not do more. All in all, what I have is less than half of my project, however I do not let this get me down too much, as I do think that I still managed to do quite a lot for the amount of time I was given. I also think that my animation is quite stiff, however that is more a case of simply not enough practise in animation and is something I’m sure I'll be better at in the future. To practice more fluidity, I believe I simply need to be more ambitious in what I plan to animate, and push myself to draw more than just head on shots, and busts. I think the combination of struggling to focus whilst working at home and having to work towards a deadline was extremely difficult to deal with and something, I'm looking forward to not facing when I finish this project in my spare time.

Conclusively, I think the project was quite successful and I am proud of what I have. I learned a lot about animation and its difficulties and improved upon my art a lot, which was my main goal.  I created an art style and characters I'm proud of and have started on something I really enjoy and so I am quite satisfied in the end.
